Special overnight stay in a covered wagon

Forget about your experiences with camping in a caravan, camper or tent with all the modern bells and whistles and surrender to the real adventure! Come sleep in a covered wagon. Like in the Wild West, but now in the Groningen landscape.

It is wonderful to sleep in our covered wagons. They are equipped with comfortable mattresses, good duvets, bed linen and beautiful blankets with beautiful western prints. The covered wagons are placed in a beautiful location on our site, depending on how the wind is. We are looking for the best place: if it can be sheltered and with a beautiful view.

We have four different covered wagons:

  • two covered wagons for two people
  • one covered wagon for two - three people
  • one covered wagon for two - four people.

Crockery, glassware, cooking utensils, etc. are available. You can make coffee / tea and cook in a separate log cabin (the so-called outdoor kitchen). But of course it is more fun to cook at the covered wagon, at a campfire with the authentic cast-iron pans, the so-called Dutch ovens. We are happy to explain how to use these pans. If the covered wagons are on our site, electricity is available.

Wild West In Groningen

The beautiful covered wagons from the past in the wild west of America have served as a model for our covered wagons. Here in Groningen we used old straw carts, as used to be used by farmers, for the undercarriages.

The interior is built of recycled wood, the hood with arches is constructed of sturdy bamboo and rope, the cloth is made of thick cotton tent cloth. The covered wagons are wind and watertight.

Covered wagon on expedition

We can place the wagon carts at any beautiful place, including outside our grounds. Are you a real adventurer? Then get ready for something special! We have found some very beautiful and unique places where you can stand for one or two nights with the covered wagon. Places you would never otherwise visit. It is offered: fantastic views and no people in sight in the wide surroundings.

Covered wagon as a groupaccomodation

With your group of friends, family, or with a group of colleagues you can book all four covered wagons as group accommodation. If the group is larger than 11 people, you can also book the straw igloos. The capacity of the covered wagons and the three straw igloos combined is a total of 21 sleeping places. For groups 35 - 40 people it is possible the entire Stro hotel. plus the covered wagons. The entire accommodation (excluding the camping area) is then exclusively for your group.

Winter camping in the covered wagon

As much snow as in this photo, and then sleeping in the covered wagon - brrrrr - we will not experience it so extreme here. In winter we place two covered wagons in the Barn & Beach. That will be sleeping in the covered wagon - on the beach - in the winter - in Groningen. If that is not special.

Do you dare to sleep outside in the freezing cold ** in the covered wagon? An ultimate form of winter camping, with an unforgettable experience when you see the sun rise over frosted and frozen land from your covered wagon, under the thick blankets.

Dear Hans and Will, the weekend is already over . We have four of us enjoyed our time in the straw castle. Breakfast was fantastic and the setting beautiful. Yesterday we did the inboeringscursus at Egbert and Ciska on farm Knight . That was an experience never to be forgotten . We felt honored to be seeing the first lambs born triplets of the season. it was a great company with foolish kind and hospitable people. The Groningen weekend was a success. Bye! Regards, John, Ellen , Rose and Puck .

It was a very fun and unique experience. The quiet surroundings , the bright sky certainly something magical. Very hospitable people here, nice breakfast in a cozy environment between all the straw. Even when it’s freezing outside , it ‘s in here nice and warm by a small heater. The Wadden are definitely worth discovering , as well as the beautiful surroundings , with its vast meadows and big farms. Hopefully till next time . Sören and Laura from the “small” Belgium

Easter 2015 Dear Hans and Will, we have enjoyed in your beautiful straw castle! After a nice welcome and a nice ‘ inboeringscursus ‘ at farmer Kees we crawled our nice bed. even though it was we slept wonderfully -5 degrees outside . In the morning we were like smoke -breathing dragons awake! Having been a delicious breakfast to Pieterburen and the mudflats . But first we have cycled a round at the Elliptigo ‘s , what does that tasty. After a wonderful night we sit down to breakfast , socializing with female Fransel . The Igloos places and you invite another visit , there are still so much to do fun things here . And the girls still want to play games again , drumming and sit on the swing . Thank you very much for your hospitality and maybe see you soon! Jack , Annie, Berit , Ylva , Jytte

Many thanks for the warm welcome and the good care during our stay. We spent the night in the beautiful group accommodation of Hayema Heerd. Inspiring to spend the night in a luxurious way on the straw. We greatly enjoyed our stay, the workshop with the shepherd and the beautiful surroundings. We can heartily recommend the workshop to other organizations that want to learn more about their (internal) cooperation. Our team has learned a lot about leadership roles in which the sheep are a wonderful mirror of our behavior.
